A whole, commercially tanned elk neck. It is very suitable for making two piece plains indians moccasin soles. Elk necks are known for material thickness, usualy 5-12 mm (1/5″ to 1/2″). Size of an avergae elk neck is about 20 dm2 (about 2 sq.feet) and it is possible to make two or three pairs of moccasin soles, depending on size. Original plains indians moccasin soles were made of thick rawhide, but as it is difficult to get and handle (and especially sew) proper rawhide, elk necks are suitable replacement. They are soft enough to sew and firm enought to use as a moccasin sole.
